Debating online is like covering yourself in unicorn dust and running through a mine field. Your advancement depends on your firstly acknowledging that unicorns don’t exist but you’re going to more than likely be in bits by the end anyway.
Welcome to the wonderful world of social media, make sure to leave your principles at the door as it’s picnic season and we are filling up on hate sandwiches (I’ll stop this). I am personally amazed at what I read online on forums and comments. It was all fun and games when we were laughing at cats falling off ledges and Nazi’s being punched in the face but underneath it all there’s always a group of people who make it their civil duty to hate everything. They’re the Unsocial Injustice Warblers.
The best thing about those people is they are very liberal in their hatred for pretty much everything outside the bubble. A few months ago I followed an organisation on twitter which promoted wellness and issues for men; such as domestic abuse, emotional support, etc. I was thinking of writing a piece about it to follow on from a bunch of feminist essays I’d done which reflected mainly on female issues. I was reflecting on the lack of support for men regarding these issues and was instantly called a Feminazi who hated men. Now, if you’re a woman and you’re being an idiot don’t expect me to support you because we both have a vagina. That isn’t feminism. On the other side of the scale you have no idea how brain meltingly boring it is for a guy whose answer to each wall of rage is “feminists hate men”. Never mind that feminists are also men, that feminists are married to men and just…never mind. You’d get more sense out of these arguments by meowing back at your cat (my cat isn’t a feminist and has a blatant disregard for the rights of any human no matter what their gender is). One of the main arguments I’ve seen time and time again about feminism obviously hating men is in the name itself – feminism. It has fem in it, what’s up with that? Surely it should have a gender neutral name like Genderism. Or Female. Wait no, not that.
These arguments are always the same and I find it really weird because we live in an age where information is at our fingertips, we can access it all from a piece of small tech in our pockets, and we choose to still be told what to think. We’re told getting things quicker is better – fast food, fast service, we are told to think fast. The faster we are in debate the more intelligent we said to look but what if the answers we give are based on our opinions or facts derived from absolute bullshit? Of course we are biased from many factors such as how we are brought up, our background, our education, our opportunities, everything we encounter is given a judgment based on a preconception. It just depends if we can realise our judgment is based on fact or fiction. If we allow ourselves to look things from a different perspective and instead ask “how does this affect me?” but “how has this happened in the first place?”. The newspapers we dismissed for technology are now joining in so they don’t miss their audience and we’re lapping it up.
Feminism seems to be an excuse these days to undermine women. If you defend women’s rights you’re a Feminazi. If you defend men’s rights you’re a Feminazi apologist. People may use it to rebel against male society but that’s like the old chestnut of calling all Muslim people terrorists and all white people members of Britain First. The actions of some do not represent all. I’ve had people argue that I’m not a true feminist because I’m married. I’m not a true feminist because I’ve reflected on someones choices. I’m not a true feminist because I have male friends. I’m not a true feminist because I’m a stay at home parent. I’m not a true feminist because I’ve been embarrassed by the lack of support for men. I am obviously some kind of super feminist with a vagina wand that can make men infertile at will. Crimes against Malemanity. Which also sounds like some kind of whale man. If a whale man had legs and a whale body do you think they could still swim?
Time to use Google.
